Facial slimming treatment involves the insertion of the same neurotransmitters used to treat wrinkles and conditions such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Masseter injections are composed of Botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin which causes temporary muscle paralysis in the injected area.
The contents of the injections help to prevent nerve signals to the jaw muscle for a brief moment of time. This results in the masseter muscle being partly deactivated, by obstructing the transfer of signals between the brain and the treated muscles, which instruct them to shrink. Aside from helping to slim the jawline, this treatment can also be used to alleviate the unwanted effects of bruxism (teeth grinding).
